Brands Hatch BSB: BSS: Easton celebrates British title

Scottish star Stuart Easton clinched the Motorpoint British Supersport crown in a heart-stopping final race at Brands Hatch.

The 30-year-old delivered the title for Northern Ireland's Mar-Train Racing team following heartbreak last year when a technical DNF in the final race cost Jack Kennedy the title.

Easton fought his way past main rival Alastair Seeley on the Gearlink Kawasaki to take the lead of the race on the Yamaha R6 in mixed conditions before a crash forced the organisers to halt the race on lap 11 as more rain began to fall.

The race was counted back to the previous lap, giving Easton the victory by 23 points in the end over Seeley.

It was a fitting end to the season for Easton, who has overcome serious injury following a horror incident at the North West 200 to become a British champion once more.

The 30-year-old, who will return to British Superbikes next year in Paul Bird's team, said: “I had planned what I was going to say if I won but I've forgotten it all now.

“The pace was a bit quicker for the conditions in the second start and I just had to hang in there for a little bit.

“I caught them back up and I knew what I had to do. I was prepared to do whatever it took. We got into the lead and red flag came out at just the right time.

“I don't care how we did it as long as we did it and a huge thanks to my team – they've given me everything I've needed to win this," he added.

“I won ten races – more than anyone else and that's why we're champions.”

The first race was stopped after a few laps due to rain and re-started shortly afterwards, with the re-start declared a wet race.

Easton's margin of victory was 0.157s over Richard Cooper, with Seeley taking third on the count-back.

Glen Richards, Northern Ireland's Glenn Irwin and Danny Buchan completed the top six.

Firstly - I have nothing against the Gearlink team - they seem like they are a great & passionate racing outfit. But... Marquez. Melandri. Two names that make a lot of us think of sharp practice, unsporting moves, block passes - anything to win basically. Not illegal perhaps, but they certainly aren't sporting and are quite happy to take away a fellow racers piece of track from under their wheels and leave them nowhere but grass or gravel to ride on. Seeley is just like those guys - just in a smaller pond. Easton is one of those racers with a lot more class, who can win without shoving his rivals into the airfence or worse. I'd have been pleased for Shakey or Alex in BSB, but it made my day when Rat-Boy took the BSS title from Seeley.
