Brands Hatch BSB: Lowes rejoices in 'incredible' title success

'It was an unbelievable last race and really difficult. I just didn't know how much to push' - Alex Lowes
Newly crowned MCE British Superbike champion Alex Lowes hailed his title success as 'incredible' following an edgy Showdown finale at Brands Hatch.

Lowes survived a number of moments in the wet conditions as he pushed hard on his Samsung Honda to first reel in rival Shane 'Shakey' Byrne and then establish a gap between the pair once the 23-year-old had moved into second place.

The Honda rider held on to finish second behind treble winner Josh Brookes and clinched the title for the first time from Byrne, who had been chasing a record fourth crown.

“I'm pretty happy about it. At least now Sam [Lowes] can't take the mickey out of me as he would have been giving it to me all winter if I'd been second,” he said.

“It was an unbelievable last race and really difficult. I just didn't know how much to push. I saw on my pit-signals that 'Shakey' was closing on me and that is the last thing you want to see.

“It was a case of keeping focused and when he got by me I knew that I had to pass back if I wanted the title and I pushed really hard,” he added.

“I had a few moments but luckily kept it all together and beat him and to me that really is incredible.”

Totally agree talentfan - BSB is so exciting because of the regulations and the skill of the riders is a massive part of the package - credit should go to Stuart Higgs etc for being brave enough to go their own way. However, the 'showdown' already feels past it's sell by date now - however 'thrilling' the last race was (and it was fantastic) it feels artificial in a way. The title fight should be over the course of a season, we've had our fun with the thrilling last day title battles, lets go back to the proper way to decide a championship.
