Top 10 BSB Rider of the Year 2013:
Jon Kirkham returned to both form and your top ten in 2013 as he found a much happier home with Buildbase BMW following a frustrating season with Samsung Honda.
With Tommy Bridewell showing what the BMW was capable of in the right hands in 2012, Buildbase BMW took a notable step in competitiveness in 2013 with Kirkham and James Westmoreland proving a solid and fast partnership, if not quite front runners.
Finding himself well suited to the S1000RR, Kirkham made a welcome return to the top five from the opening race, results he could go on to repeat in the coming rounds. A couple of lacklustre weekends notwithstanding, Kirkham was the measure of consistency in 2013 and 15 top ten finishes – including eight top six results – would have normally been good enough to squeeze into the BSB Title Showdown.
However, his team-mate Westmoreland would match him for that dependability and when the pair finished level on points at the end of the ninth round, it would remarkably take organisers to go down to the number of sixth place finishes achieved on count-back to separate them.
Unfortunately for Kirkham, Westmoreland would get the nod, leaving the 29-year-old to contest the consolation prize of the 'BSB Riders Cup', which he duly secured for the second time in three years. It won't have escaped his notice though that, had BSB still be using the former points' system, he'd have ended the year fifth overall.
With this in mind, Kirkham can be satisfied with his 2013 season as he looks ahead to a 2014 season spent on arguably more favourable Kawasaki machinery
