MCE British Superbike contender Shane 'Shakey' Byrne stayed on top of the pile as testing concluded on day one at Almeria in Spain.

Byrne had topped the times in the morning and held on to the number one spot on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki in the afternoon, despite taking the decision to end earlier than anticipated as a result of strong winds.

The three-time BSB champion lapped in 1m 37.544s to head James Ellison on the Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki by 1.779s with Stuart Easton third overall on the second PBM ZX-10R.

Scotsman Easton failed to better his time from the morning when a spill in the afternoon put paid to his chances of progress.

Byrne told the official British Superbike website: "It was a good run out for us this morning and it felt good to be back on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki after the few months away.

"Unfortunately it has been a bit windy this afternoon, but we got some good laps in this morning to have a ride around and blow the cobwebs away. We finished early this afternoon and we will be ready to pick up with it again tomorrow."

Ellison continued to adapt to the Kawasaki following his switch from the Milwaukee Yamaha team as he slotted into second ahead of reigning British Supersport champion Easton, who revealed he was caught out by the windy conditions in Spain.

"It's good to be back on the bike, but unfortunately I got caught out by a gust of wind and had a crash which was unfortunate and it gave the boys some work to do," said Easton. "But we will be back and hope for a better day tomorrow."

Dan Linfoot was fourth fastest on the Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki after overcoming a technical problem with the bike as he finished the session ahead of team-mate Chris Walker.

Yeovil's Martin Jessopp skipped the afternoon practice run as his Riders Motorcycles team focused on making changes to his BMW S1000RR.

Almeria combined day one times:
1. Shane Byrne 1m 37.544s
2. James Ellison +1.779ss
