The first day of official MCE British Superbike Championship pre-season testing has concluded with Shane Byrne's lap record topping the timesheets at Donington Park.

The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider, who is attempting to score a record fourth BSB title in 2014, took the new-look Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki to a lap time of 1min 29.550secs, eclipsing the previous record in the process.

Not that Byrne was the sole dominant rider around the Leicestershire circuit, with new Milwaukee Yamaha recruit Josh Brookes proving similarly fast at 1min 29.736secs after the day's two sessions.

Some six tenths further back was third place man Jakub Smrz, the former WSBK podium showing encouraging pace on what will be the only Ducati 1199 Panigale R in the field this season, while BSB veteran Chris Walker was fourth fastest for new employers Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki.

Heading up the BMW charge in fifth was James Westmoreland, ahead of Tommy Bridewell and series returnee Stuart Easton, while John Hopkins made a welcome return to British soil with the eighth best time for Tyco Suzuki.

Ahead of his much anticipated switch to BMW machinery in 2014, Ryuichi Kiyonari was a notable ninth best on the Buildbase machine, ahead of James Ellison.

Of the many newcomers to the 30-strong BSB grid in 2014 (see full entry list here), Richard Cooper was fastest on the Anvil Hire TAG Kawasaki in 12th place
