Shane Byrne has started as he means to go on by topping the first test session of the 2014 British Superbike opener at Brands Hatch.

The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider heads into the 2014 season as the evident favourite having dominated pre-season testing, a status he reflected during the first test of a four-day race weekend in Kent by proving a comfortable two tenths ahead of his opposition.

Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes headed up the competition in second place as the only other rider to break into the 45secs bracket, while Stuart Easton completed the top three on the second of the Paul Bird-prepared Kawasakis.

Carrying their good form from testing, GBmoto Kawasaki's Chris Walker and Buildbase BMW's Ryuichi Kiyonari were fourth and fifth best, with BSB returnee John Hopkins heading up the Suzuki challenge in sixth.

One of only two Hondas on the grid this weekend, Simon Andrews flew the flag for the Japanese firm in an encouraging seventh, ahead of James Westmoreland, Jakub Smrz and Dan Linfoot.
