Brands Hatch Indy: Brookes reflects on battling runner-up finish

Australian star Josh Brookes fights back after race one spill to take second place behind Shane Byrne in second MCE British Superbike showdown at Brands Hatch
Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes made amends for a first race spill by taking a battling runner-up finish in race two at Brands Hatch on Easter Monday.

The Australian rider celebrated his first MCE British Superbike podium finish for Shaun Muir's team after fighting his way through from the fourth row of the grid.

Brookes was challenging at the front of the pack in the opening race when he went down at Druids, escaping unhurt.

He made rapid progress in the second race and eventually caught race leader Shane Byrne, however a slower rider hampered Brookes on the penultimate lap and his chance of launching a bid for the lead evaporated.

Brookes, though, was satisfied with his rostrum finish and is now relishing round two at Oulton Park on May 5.

“I was really happy with how the second race went. Over the weekend Milwaukee Yamaha have given me everything I needed to do the job and all the mistakes have been mine so I can't blame anyone but myself,” he said.

“Starting from tenth in race two wasn't ideal but I didn't know where I could finish so I wasn't sure how it was all going to pan out. My focus was on whoever was in front of me, that might sound stupid, but I was looking at one rider at a time and nothing else.

“As I made passes I built confidence and caught Shane but it was too late and I wasn't in a position to make a pass,” added the 30-year-old.

“I am not over the moon with second because we started the weekend with the potential to win races, but it wasn't to be. We will take the second place and see what we can do at Oulton Park because in the past that has been a superb track for the Milwaukee Yamaha.”
