Shane Byrne has smashed Ryuichi Kiyonari's eight year-old lap record of the Oulton Park circuit on a British Superbike after turning in an incredible 1min 34.939secs lap in FP3.

Having seen Josh Brookes get to within a few hundredths of the 2006 record on the Saturday, Byrne not only went beneath it but became the first rider to crack into the 1min 34secs bracket too.

Behind Brookes, James Ellison was third quickest, but it was a dramatic session for his GBmoto Kawasaki team-mate Chris Walker after he came down in a spectacular way. Indeed, though the slip off was fairly low speed, the Kawasaki would catch air, rupturing a fuel line and engulfing into a spectacular fireball.

Fortunately, Walker - who helped the marshals put the fire out - was unharmed in the incident and is hopeful of making it out for qualifying.

Erstwhile lap record holder Kiyonari was fourth fastest, while Richard Cooper continued his impressive pace on the TAG Kawasaki in fifth.
