Shane Byrne has taken pole position for the third round of the 2014 MCE British Superbike Championship at Snetterton after scorching to a new lap record.

With both himself and Josh Brookes topping a session each during the first two knockout phases, the pair were primed for a two-way shootout for pole position.

However, it was Byrne that would fire in a scintillating lap of 1min 47.488secs, putting half a second up on the competition for his second pole position of the season.

Brookes had to contend with second, though he was lucky not to be demoted to third by Jakub Smrz, who gave the Ducati Panigale its first BSB front-row , just two hundredths of a second behind the Milwaukee Yamaha.

On its return to BSB competition, Honda Racing was fourth with Julien Da Costa doing a stellar job on last year's title-winning CBR1000RR, ensuring four different manufacturers inside the top four.

Tommy Bridewell starts in fifth place, ahead of James Ellison on the best of the GBmoto Kawasakis, the Briton bringing some cheer to the squad after Chris Walker failed to set a time in Q2, leaving him 20th.

Patric Muff will start from a season-best seventh as the best BMW, ahead of counterparts Ryuichi Kiyonari and James Westmoreland, while Keith Farmer is tenth, albeit after crashing his PR Kawasaki in Q3.
