Josh Brookes has laid down the benchmark for his British Superbike Championship rivals in second free practice at Brands Hatch, going three tenths faster than Shane Byrne.

A day after seemingly confirmed he will look to exit BSB at the end of this season [see separate story], Brookes was impressive around the longer variation of the Kent circuit to emerge comfortably fastest overall.

A triple winner there at the 2013 season-ender, Brookes headed up main BSB title rival Byrne in second place, with FP1 pace setter James Ellison and Knockhill race winner Ryuichi Kiyonari behind as the only four riders to break 1min 27secs.

Enjoying a stronger first day than of late, John Hopkins was fifth best on the Tyco Suzuki, ahead of Tommy Bridewell, Chris Walker, Richard Cooper, Dan Linfoot and Jakub Smrz.
