Brands Hatch GP: Ellison suffers broken femur in Brands crash

James Ellison is confirmed with a broken femur following his high-speed accident during the second BSB race at Brands Hatch.
James Ellison's hopes of reaching the 2014 British Superbike Title Showdown have been dealt a major blow after he was diagnosed broken femur and other minor injuries following his huge accident at Brands Hatch.

The Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki rider came down on the approach to Dingle Dell whilst leading the second BSB race at Brands Hatch, the experienced racer taken to Kings College Hospital in London, where they confirmed a break to the ball at the top of his right femur

Set to undergo surgery, Ellison's GBmoto team manager Mark Smith-Halvorsen says it is uncertain as to when he could return to action, he says any comeback won't be rushed.

“After looking so strong all weekend it was a gutting conclusion for James. He was out there leading the race and pushing with the front running pace he had shown all weekend, but one small mistake has ended with a huge accident that was entirely undeserved.

"After reviewing his X-rays, and on the advice of specialists, he is currently undergoing surgery this morning at Kings College Hospital in London. From there we as a team will be doing everything we can to ensure a swift and complete recovery for James so we can see him back out where he belongs; on his #77 Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki.

"Currently, we have no confirmation on how long he will be out of action for and we'll not be pushing for him to return until he is fully fit and ready to do so. I would like to personally send my best wishes to James, as do the entire team – our well wishes also go to Barry Burrell who had a big crash yesterday too.”

The former BSB runner-up has been enjoying one of the strongest BSB seasons of his long career in 2014, mounting the podium on seven occasions out of ten races so far in 2014.

However, his potential absence from at least the next two rounds – including the Oulton Park double-header – could have huge ramifications for his hopes of reaching the Title Showdown. As it stands, he is third overall 34 points clear of the current seventh place rider Dan Linfoot.

Why does something need to be done about the safety fence and why is it rotten luck? Ellison got it wrong coming out of Westfield & was too hot entering Dingle Dell. He went onto the grass and high-sided. The injury occurred when he hit the ground from the highside. It had nothing to do with the safety fence which did the job it was designed to do. As for rotten luck, no. Bad luck is when something nasty happens beyond your control. This was down to rider error plain & simple. I feel sorry for what happened to Ellison but it was not down to either (bad) luck or the fences.

Rotten luck for JE. I had an idea he'd hurt his leg as soon as I saw the replay & the way he stayed seated even though he took off his lid & gloves. A tough guy. I think he was starting to gel with the team and the Kwak, & start to feel he could give Shakey a run for his money this season too. Real shame for the guy. Get well soon JE. I hope Stalker can continue to show competitively & give the team something to cheer about. With a break so close to the joint poor Ellison may be out for a while
