Shane 'Shakey' Byrne made his intentions clear as the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider powered to the summit of the MCE British Superbike times during FP2 at Cadwell Park.

Byrne, who is chasing his first wins during the Bank Holiday weekend meeting since round four at Knockhill, posted a lap of 1m 26.990s to lead FP1 pacesetter Ryuichi Kiyonari (Buildbase BMW) by 0.328 seconds.

The three-time BSB champion was the only rider to dip into the 1m 26s bracket as he came within three tenths of a second of the lap record set by Leon Haslam eight years ago.

Millsport Ducati's Jakub Smrz, who was also a faller in FP1, came off at Hall Bend, bringing out the red flags. The Czech rider was taken to the medical centre but escaped serious injury in the incident.

Dan Linfoot continued his pursuit of a Showdown place as the Quattro Kawasaki rider ended the session third fastest with a lap of 1m 28.103s, which left him 1.113s down on Byrne's hot lap.

Chris Walker (GBmoto Kawasaki), Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes and Peter Hickman on the RAF Reserves Honda rounded out the top six on day one at Cadwell.

Scotsman Stuart Easton on the second of Paul Bird's Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki machines was seventh quickest - 1.7s off the leaders' pace - followed by Barry Burrell (Team WD40 Kawasaki) and Halsall Kawasaki's Jon Kirkham.

Josh Waters was the top Tyco Suzuki rider in 12th place as the Brand Hatch winner finished behind Howie Mainwaring (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) and Buildbase BMW's James Westmoreland, back in action from injury this weekend.

Milwaukee Yamaha's Tommy Bridewell was languishing in 13th place, one position ahead of Martin Jessopp on the Riders Motorcycles BMW, with beleaguered American star John Hopkins 15th on the Tyco Suzuki and 2.24 seconds behind Byrne.

James Ellison, also making a return from injury this weekend on the GBmoto Kawasaki, was 16th.
