John Hopkins emerged as the surprise pace setter in second free practice for the ninth British Superbike Championship round at Donington Park.

Having shown a glimpse at his best form in FP1 with the third best time, the 2011 BSB runner-up went faster in FP2 with a late lap that would place him just under a tenth ahead of Shane Byrne.

A welcome return to the top of the timesheets for the Tyco Suzuki rider in what has proven to be a difficult return to competition this season, Hopkins led the leading BSB title protagonists Byrne, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Josh Brookes in a closely-matched session.

Dan Linfoot completed the top five, ahead of last year's Donington Park pole sitter James Westmoreland and Stuart Easton, while Tommy Bridewell, Patric Muff and Howie Mainwaring completed the top ten, the latter doing so despite suffering a fall.

I must say, it has taken longer than expected for JH21 to get up to speed. Truth is, Hopper took a year+ off. Bad news is Hopkins will not make the showdown. Good news is the last four venues are world class circuits where John should do well and has in the past. Fast today @ Donington, on pole riding the MotoGP Rizla suzook in '07 @ Assen. Silverstone, Brands Hatch. Both fast and fantastic tracks that should suit the GSXR's strengths. Finish strong Mr. Hopkins. Nothing better than momentum going into 2015.
