Three months after breaking his hip in a high-speed accident around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, James Ellison will start from his first pole position of the 2014 MCE British Superbike Championship season at the same circuit after dominating qualifying.

The experienced racer, who was this weekend confirmed as staying with GBmoto Kawasaki in 2015, topped all three qualifying stages, which were held in the tricky conditions of a dry racing line, but damp and slippery offline.

The result for Ellison comes after a spectacular accident around the same venue in July ultimately prevented him from reaching the Title Showdown, but pole position here not only marks his first such result of 2014, but also another new milestone for the GBmoto Kawasaki team.

Shane Byrne will start the first of the weekend's three races from second position, a comfortable performance on a day when main title rival Ryuichi Kiyonari ruled himself out of contention with an accident during FP3.

fracturing his collarbone, Kiyonari won't compete in race one and even if he does make it out for the second and third races tomorrow, his hopes of bridging the 12 point gap to Byrne look slim now.

A late improvement by Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes would see him snatch a spot on the outside of the front row in third place at the expense of Jon Kirkham, the Halsall Kawasaki rider nonetheless showing well in qualifying once more to claim fourth.

John Hopkins rounds out the top five, though the American was unfortunate not to be higher after making a mistake on a lap that had seen him post session-best sectors up to that point.

Tommy Bridewell and Dan Linfoot – who are in contention with Brookes for third overall – could only manage sixth and eighth respectively for the first race, the pair split by RAF Reserves Honda rider Peter Hickman, while Julien Da Costa and wet weather specialist Gary Mason completed the top ten.

Elsewhere, sixth and final Title Showdown contender Chris Walker was 11th best, while there was particular disappointment for Josh Waters who, having been quickest in FP3, suffered a fall at Clark Curve in SP1. Though he would make it out for SP2, he could only manage 18th.
