BSB Brands Hatch: Brookes vows to prove he can be a ‘champion’

Josh Brookes says he is determined to prove he can be a British Superbike Champion in 2015 after disappointing end to his 2014 campaign.
Josh Brookes says he will return to the MCE British Superbike Championship next season to prove he is a champion after seeing his burgeoning 2014 title challenge end on a whimper at Brands Hatch.

Having made the switch from Tyco Suzuki to Milwaukee Yamaha over the winter, Brookes began the season as the most likely rival to Shane Byrne and while his counterpart held the upper hand in the first portion of the year as a whole, the Australian's four wins suggested he was still a key threat for the Title Showdown.

A double DNF at Assen – followed by a crash at Silverstone – quickly scuppered those title dreams, with Brookes instead forced to fend off Tommy Bridewell and Dan Linfoot for third place in the standings.

An indifferent final event that would see him finish eighth, fourth and fifth in the three races at Brands Hatch would duly not prove enough to resist team-mate Bridewell, Brookes ending the year in a frustrated fourth place.

“I was really pleased with my riding really I felt like that I've rode as good as I could, even in the second race. It probably didn't show that well but I was riding hard, but the bike was everywhere. I feel like this weekend for some reason I've been underpowered, performance wise, even the slipstream with Tommy I didn't make any ground and that was a real hindrance on my progress.”

Despite the disappointing conclusion to his year, Brookes – who was at one time linked with a move into WSBK next season – is convinced he will be BSB champion and having re-signed with Milwaukee Yamaha for 2015 is determined to prove it next year.

“My results suffered but I feel like I was riding well and so I'm happy with that. I'm a bit disappointed that the year's over and not over for good reasons, but that's why I'm coming back next year to make it right and do it another time and try and put things right for myself.

“In my head I know I'm a champion and capable of it, just I need to come back next year and prove it.”

Brookes is expected to get use of the new Yamaha Superbike model for next season.

The GSXR and R1 are pretty outdated now, so with the new R1, 2015 must be his best chance. Brookes hasn't exactly endeared himself to the fans in recent times so he should expect no sympathy if he doesn't perform next season.
