Donington Park: Kiyonari: Buildbase BMW starting on a high

Last year's British Superbike runner-up Ryuichi Kiyonari says his Buildbase BMW team will start the season much stronger compared to 12 months ago
Ryuichi Kiyonari says he is starting the new MCE British Superbike season streets ahead in comparison with 12 months ago as he looks to gain revenge on last season's bitter disappointments.

The three-time BSB champion was involved in a monumental battle for the title with Shane Byrne in 2014 and heading into the final round at Brands Hatch he trailed the Londoner by just 12 points.

The Japanese rider was cruelly denied the chance to fight for the championship after he suffered a fractured collarbone in crash during free practice meaning he was unable to race which handed the championship crown to Byrne.

The Buildbase BMW rider is back to full fitness and despite having a scary crash at the end of the official BSB test day last week, he is feeling much stronger than last year.

"I'm feeling good ahead of the season,” Kiyonari said. “The new BMW is very good, it has a lot of potential and I think we can improve it even more. Testing was good, I had a small crash but these things happen, I'm OK and ready to race.”

The 32-year-old was always playing catch up on Byrne in 2014 after a difficult start to the season on the BMW S1000RR. Kiyonari failed to make the podium until the fourth round at Knockhill and also suffered a double retirement in round two at Oulton Park.

Despite missing his team's winter testing in Spain, the BMW rider is confident he has the pace to win from the off at Donington Park this weekend.

“Last year I started from zero and got better and better but this year we start medium or high so I think we can make a better start. I hope we can win even more this year," he added.

Donington Park is set to host the 2015 BSB curtain raiser and is a happy hunting ground for Kiyonari, after he recorded a double victory last season.

The Japanese rider finished third fastest at last weeks' Donington Park test as he got to grips with the 2015 S1000RR and says he has just one goal this year – to win a fourth BSB title.

GO Kiyo!!! Byrne won last year...and if BSB used standard points system...Byrne would have won also...but anyway...the current BSB system allows for this competition and most certainly we were robbed of a thrilling final encounter.... I like Byrne but I am pulling for Kiyo this year...maybe even Brookes... a different champ would spice things up but mostly I am looking for on track competition not some runaway wins etc....Go BSB!!
