Donington Park: Linfoot calls Honda Racing podium a massive high

Dan Linfoot says he never expected to be fighting for the lead with Shane Byrne and was thrilled to secure second place on Honda Racing's BSB return
Dan Linfoot says he has been given a huge high after finishing second in race two at the MCE British Superbike season opener at Donington Park.

The Honda Racing rider secured his best career finish to a BSB race and was only half a second off winner Shane Byrne. His podium appearance capped an impressive race weekend after taking fourth place in race one despite narrowly missing out on the podium after Josh Brookes beat him to the line.

Despite Linfoot battling for victory for the majority of the race he says he never envisaged being in a battle for a potential maiden win.

“I went into the race wanting to build on race one and never intended to have a battle with Shakey, it was just the circumstances at the time,” Linfoot said. “I made a good start with some passes early on and immediately found myself behind Shakey and I thought if I had the opportunity [to pass] then I would and it did.

“I'm over the moon with the two points-scoring finishes and the podium was a bonus. To come away with second place is fantastic and have to say thank you to Honda for the big effort they put in.

“I'm now really looking forward to Brands Hatch in two weeks and I feel like I've released some endorphin into my body so I'm really excited for Brands.”

Linfoot's battle with Byrne also provided the Yorkshire rider with the first opportunity to directly compare his new Honda CBR1000RR with its Kawasaki rival as the pair dueled for the lead.

“I wanted to set my own pace but not push too hard as I didn't want to kill the softer Pirelli tyre,” Linfoot explained. “I know Shakey has always got something up his sleeve and can pull the pin at any time. It was refreshing to see him go ahead because I could stay behind him for a couple of laps and see where the Kawasaki is weaker compared to the Honda.”

The Honda rider ends round one of the 2015 British Superbike season in second place in the riders' standings, 12 points behind defending champion Byrne.

Well ridden by Dan in both races - hopefully this is the start of great things to come! Even Byrne said he hadn't enjoyed himself like that since riding with Lowes... sound like pretty high praise to me.
