James Ellison has converted his strong practice pace into pole position for race one at round two of the MCE British Superbike season at Brands Hatch.

The JG Speedfit Kawasaki broke the Brands Hatch Indy circuit lap record with a 45.310s, fending off surprise package Jakub Smrz who grabs second place on his Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati 1199 Panigale.

Ellison, who took victory in the 2015 BSB curtain raiser at Donington Park two weeks ago, led the pack in both FP2 and FP3 after overtaking Kiyonari at the top on Friday. The 34-year-old dominated Q3, setting three consecutive provisional pole lap times which demonstrated his strength on the Kawasaki ZX-10R.

Ducati's Smrz will start from P2, with his quickest lap two-and-a-half-tenths off Ellison but edged Kiyonari into P3 by 0.020s.

Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes heads row two ahead of the PBM Kawasaki duo of Shane Byrne and Stuart Easton.

Jason O'Halloran acted as the sole Honda rider in qualifying after Dan Linfoot was absent through injury and Jenny Tinmouth failed to make the top 30.

Linfoot had to watch from the garages after breaking his wrist in a nasty crash during free practice one on Friday. The Honda Racing rider has been ruled out of this weekend's round at the Kent circuit and round three at Oulton Park in two weeks time and is set to undergo an operation on his wrist next week.

Christian Iddon and Broc Parkes joined O'Halloran on row three while an impressive qualifying performance from Team WD-40's Jack Kennedy saw him complete the top ten.
