Brands Hatch Indy: Ellison: Double winner is best I've ever had

James Ellison says his maiden BSB double winner is the best he's ever had and feels this could be his year in the MCE British Superbike championship
James Ellison has hailed his maiden British Superbike double victory weekend as 'the best I've ever had' and now has his eyes firmly set on hunting down championship leader Shane Byrne.

The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider enjoyed a flawless second round of the MCE British Superbike season after taking pole position, two race victories and set a new fastest lap around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit. As a result, he has closed the gap to leader Byrne to six points in the riders' standings, after the defending champion notched up two second places at the Kent circuit.

“Not a bad weekend, certainly the best I've ever had,” Ellison said. “We've had a bit of bad luck over the past couple of years despite strong starts in 2013 and 2014 and for whatever reason not been able to hold it together. Hopefully, and without jinxing it, this should be our year.

“Once we were able to dial it in it felt perfect which almost never happens. I came in after free practice and was asked what did I want to change and said nothing. Then after race one asked what did I want to change I said nothing. It doesn't happen very often.”

The 34-year-old rider puts his phenomenal pace down to his GBmoto crew who he says have found massive improvements in his Kawasaki ZX-10R over the winter.

“We've found quite a bit more horsepower this year and with some upgrades with the geometry with the bike and the brakes to get a better package which has allowed me to ride at my best,” he explained. “After Donington I didn't want it to upset my rhythm because we'd had a really good tests over winter. The guys have are built a fantastic bike and it is the best thing I've ever ridden in BSB.

“A happy rider is a fast rider and it's more enjoyable because I'm not having to fight the bike or make any compromises. I'm really happy with it and we are in that little window. I was able to go out there today and reap the rewards of it.”

I'm pleased to see James pushing for the wins and hope he can continue this through the year. I am curious as to the bike he's riding. It sounded from the interview that it is basically last year's bike. The guys with the newest ZX10 really seem to be struggling to make it perform, so I wonder if this explains Ellison's performance?

Good luck James - you certainly deserve it! A real tryer who deserves success. Might be a good thing to see someone taking it to Shane Byrne who seems to have been the main man in the last few years - deservedly so but competition always adds some real spice to things so bring it on!
