Shane Byrne has set the early pace at Oulton Park in the first free practice, running three-tenths of a second quicker than his nearest challenger Tommy Bridewell.
The defending MCE British Superbike champion remained on top throughout the first session and went under the lap record with his final run, a 1m 35.379s, to give him an initial cushion on his rivals.
On a cold track the majority of the field eased themselves into round three of the BSB championship. Conditions remained dry throughout the session but heavy rain clouds threatened overhead and wet weather is expected for this afternoon's practice.
Tyco BMW's Bridewell jumped ahead of Ryuichi Kiyonari to take second on the timesheet with Stuart Easton and Brands Hatch double race winner James Ellison rounding out the top five.
Honda Racing's Jason O'Halloran put his Fireblade CBR1000RR sixth, ahead of Josh Brookes, who had topped the mid-season practice day around the Cheshire track last week. RAF Reserves BMW's Peter Hickman, Be Wiser Kawasaki Danny Buchan and Team WD40 Kawasaki's Jack Kennedy completed the top ten.
The action continues with a second 50-minute session this afternoon.
