Oulton Park International: Brookes fastest in wet FP2, Byrne still top overall

Josh Brookes steals top spot on the timesheet from Howie Mainwaring in a wet free practice session, Shane Byrne remains fastest overall

Josh Brookes set the quickest time in a wet free practice two with his very last lap of the day at Oulton Park, stealing the top spot from rain-expert Howie Mainwaring by two-tenths of a second.

The Milwaukee Yamaha rider has finished on top with a 1m 53.314s but due to the wet conditions none of the MCE British Superbike grid made any improvements on their free practice one times. As a result, Shane Byrne still remains top on the combined timesheet with his 1m 35.379s lap in the morning session.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider Mainwaring, who is famous for strong performances in wet weather conditions, ended the session second with Tommy Bridewell in third.

In the treacherous conditions former MotoGP team-mates Michael Laverty and Broc Parkes both crashed at Hizzy's within seconds of one another but the pair were okay to continue.

However, ten minutes into free practice two Rhalf Lo Turco slipped off at Brittens and required medical attention which caused the session to be briefly halted by a red flag.

Once the session resumed lap times gradually came down as the rain relented, with Bridewell leading the way.

With seven minutes remaining the session was suspended for a second time after Peter Hickman fell at Druids and was taken to the medical centre as a precaution.

Due to the loss of time in FP2 the session was restarted for a final four minutes, when Brookes and Mainwaring notched up their fastest laps.

BSB veteran Michael Rutter ended FP2 fourth with Czech rider Jakub Smrz in fifth. Combined timesheet topper Byrne only came out of the garage for the final 15 minutes of the session and took sixth place.

James Westmoreland, Danny Buchan, Richard Cooper and Milwaukee Yamaha's Parkes rounded out the top ten.
