Josh Brookes has smashed his own lap record around the Snetterton 300 circuit, edging out Shane Byrne on the first day of the mid-season MCE British Superbike test.
The Milwaukee Yamaha rider was involved in a battle with the defending British Superbike champion for the top spot on the timesheets and both racers lapped underneath Brookes' old lap record of 1m 47.882s. The Australian rider was the first to break the record with a 1m 47.721s only from Byrne to beat that by going a tenth of a second quicker.
Brookes returned to the pits to make adjustments to his Yamaha YZF R1 machine before shattering Byrne's time by nearly half a second and setting a new lap record of 1m 47.176s. The PBM Kawasaki rider was unable to respond after he stopped at turn two with a technical fault and the rest of the field were unable to get within reach of the pair.
Byrne also suffered a lowside crash during the first session of the day at the Norfolk circuit but was still able to finish on top of the timesheets before the lunch interval.
Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati rider Jakub Smrz ended the day third with Honda Racing's Jason O'Halloran in fourth to make it four different manufacturers occupying the top four spots.
Former MotoGP rider Broc Parkes began to find some consistency on board his Milwaukee Yamaha, ending the day in fifth ahead of current BSB championship leader James Ellison. Danny Buchan ended the seventh quickest with Howie Mainwaring splitting the two Be Wiser Kawasaki riders as Chris Walker grabbed ninth. Oulton Park race two winner Stuart Easton completed the top ten.
The test marked the return of two BSB riders who had been absent from round three, with Peter Hickman and Dan Linfoot ending the day 16th and 20th respectively.
A few riders are absent from the test, with Buildbase BMW's Ryuichi Kiyonari at home in Japan and Michael Laverty and Tommy Bridewell unable to test as their Tyco BMW team prepares for the Isle of Man TT.
