Shane Byrne has set the pace in the opening free practice session at Snetterton and has edged outright lap record holder Josh Brookes as the teams got back up to speed after the six week break.
The reigning British Superbike champion jumped to the top of the timesheet in the early stages and was only briefly displaced by Brookes when the pair traded fastest lap times in the final few minutes of the session.
The current BSB championship leader James Ellison grabbed third spot in the session as he looks to strengthen his position at the top while the rider with arguably the most work to do to catch up Ellison, Ryuichi Kiyonari, took fourth.
Shane Byrne led the early shakedown stages with a 1m 48.286s with Josh Brookes narrowly trailing by less than a thousand of a second on the timesheet. As all the riders got up to speed, Brookes' outright lap record set at the mid-season test last month stayed comfortably out of reach but Byrne was able to beat the lap record from 2014 by 0.2s.
Smiths Racing's Billy McConnell stopped with a technical problem at Palmer with three minutes remaining in the opening session and there was just one faller, Honda Racing's Jason O'Halloran, in a restrained FP1.
Jakub Smrz completed the top five on the Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati Panigale R with Be Wiser Kawasaki's Danny Buchan narrowly behind him.
Howie Mainwaring grabbed seventh in the first session and was the meat in a Be Wiser Kawasaki sandwich with Chris Walker in eighth. Lee Jackson and Christian Iddon rounded out the top ten.
