Shane Byrne has picked up exactly where he finished at Snetterton by setting the fastest time in the opening free practice session at Knockhill to head a PBM Kawasaki one-two, as local rider Stuart Easton grabs second spot in the final moments.
The double race winner at Snetterton marched to the top of the timesheet in the opening stages of the session and was never displaced, eventually setting the quickest lap of 48.487s to pull out almost a third of a second on his team-mate.
Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes acted as PBM Kawasaki's closest rival after ending the session in third, narrowly edging out surprise package Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Luke Mossey into fourth as Tyco BMW's Michael Laverty rounded out the top five.
Bennetts Suzuki rider Christian Iddon followed closely to make it four different manufacturers inside the top six while former BSB championship leader James Ellison ended the session in seventh. Howie Mainwaring Smart, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Peter Hickman completed the top ten.
With near-perfect conditions Byrne's fastest lap is remarkably just 0.35s off last year's pole position lap time of 48.112s set by Kiyonari, and the weather looks set to stay fair so lap times are likely to continue to tumble.
Byrne was the first rider to duck under the 49-second mark to take control of the early proceedings while Tommy Bridewell, who had complained of set up issues with his Tyco BMW last time out, was another rider immediately on the pace.
15 minutes into the opening session the race weekend suffered its first faller as Buildbase BMW's Lee Jackson took a small tumble at turn six but was able to walk away okay.
Moments after Jackson's stricken bike was recovered Morello Racing's Lee Costello had a nasty off at turn four which briefly red flagged FP1 so the rider could be safely transported to the medical centre.
Once the session restarted and the riders were back up to speed Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Mossey leapt up the timesheet to take second spot from Bridewell, who then almost instantly had a small moment at turn seven which forced him off track with just over 20 minutes remaining.
As the BSB pack prepared for a final few blasts at the end of the session Smiths Racing's Billy McConnell had a fall at turn three but was okay to walk back to the pits. With five minutes remaining PBM Kawasaki grabbed its 1-2 on the timesheet as home rider Stuart Easton displaced Mossey for second spot, while Brookes rose to third late on.
