James Ellison says his JG Speedfit Kawasaki team has the capabilities to challenge for the MCE British Superbike championship title but is missing the luck required to win.

The British rider has surrendered his lead in the BSB championship standings over the past two rounds and after just one points-scoring finish in four races Ellison has slipped to fourth place and 83 points behind defending champion Shane Byrne.

At Knockhill Ellison suffered a frustrating double DNF after crashing out of race one and being hampered by a technical fault which ended his second race. Despite his struggles Ellison is adamant his team can recover and launch a fightback later in the season.

"The team have worked flat out and the bike is mega, it's a championship winning package and we just need a bit of luck to get back to where we've shown we can run," Ellison said. "This weekend has been bitterly disappointing. I struggled a little with the ribs [Ellison broke a rib in a qualifying crash at Snetterton] but we had the pace to be running at the front and chasing a podium and even the wins.

"I had a silly little crash in the first race, which was a weird as we didn't do anything different but it was at the same corner a lot of the guys did too so I'm not sure if there was something there."

Ellison has kept his faith in the team after setting the fastest lap of anyone in race one which handed in pole position for race two at Knockhill. However, bad luck once again curtailed his challenge with his Kawasaki ZX-10R spluttering to a halt after the restart.

"Again that last race I came into it very confident of a good result and following Laverty for the opening few laps I thought I could be quicker so put a move on him," Ellison said. "But it was a bit of a hard one and the forks bottomed out which tried to tuck the front. The red flag gave us a bit of chance to move up but the bike cut out on us across the straight."

Ellison will now look to regroup ahead of the return to Brands Hatch, where on the Indy circuit he claimed pole position and two victories in April.
