Fresh from his MotoGP exploits Michael Laverty has topped FP2 at Brands Hatch by edging out MCE British Superbike championship leader Shane Byrne and Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes.

The Northern Irishman acted as stand in for the recently departed Marco Melandri in MotoGP for Aprilia last weekend and it has clearly had a positive effect on his performances as he consistently set top-end lap times.

PBM Kawasaki's Byrne and Milwaukee Yamaha's Brookes were always within touching distance of the Tyco BMW rider but were not quite able to reel him in after he took to the top midway through the afternoon session.

Laverty's team-mate Tommy Bridewell also made significant improvements to cap a positive day for Philip Neill's squad, with the Wiltshire rider taking fourth place in FP2.

Anvil Hire TAG Kawasaki's Richard Cooper continued to impress by rounding out the top five on the timesheet, while double race winner around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit James Ellison grabbed sixth.

2011 BSB runner-up John Hopkins demonstrated he'd lost none of his pace by finishing the session seventh on the Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati as a stand in for the injured Jakub Smrz. Martin Jessopp, James Westmoreland and Jason O'Halloran completed the top ten spots, as Ryuichi Kiyonari continued to struggle in the midfield and ended the day 13th fastest.

Milwaukee Yamaha's Brookes immediately picked up where he left off in FP1 by taking the initiative as the majority of the BSB field continued to tweak their bikes ahead of the weekend's action.

Tyco BMW's Laverty, fresh from his MotoGP exploits in Germany, began to make progress up the timesheet to take top spot with a fastest lap 0.006s up on Brookes.

In a largely uneventful middle chunk of the afternoon session the bulk of riders concentrated on long heavy fuel runs or setup changes and as a result the timesheet was left largely unchanged.

With the session ticking down into the final 10 minutes the riders switched their attention to outright single lap pace with Laverty again improving to pull out a bigger gap at the front.

Honda Racing team-mates O'Halloran and Jenny Tinmouth took tumbles in separate incidents which brought a premature end to their afternoons.

Despite a late improvement by Byrne he was unable to better Laverty's time, who topped a session in BSB for the first time since returning to the series at the start of the year.
