Josh Brookes has immediately picked up where he left off from Brands Hatch by going quickest in the opening free practice at Thruxton, pipping Shane Byrne on his final lap of the session.
As the MCE British Superbike field got up to speed at the Hampshire circuit the Milwaukee Yamaha rider grabbed top spot from Byrne in the final few seconds to pull out an early 0.1s advantage.
Be Wiser Kawasaki's Danny Buchan was on the cusp of finishing FP1 fastest after becoming the first rider to break the 1m 16s mark but a crash at Cobb two minutes from the end allowed Brookes and Byrne to nip ahead.
Richard Cooper of Anvil Hire TAG Kawasaki, who grabbed an impressive double rostrum last time out at Brands Hatch, maintained his strong pace to end the session fourth with JG Speedfit Kawasaki's James Westmoreland rounding out the top five.
John Hopkins, acting as stand in for the injured Jakub Smrz at the Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati squad, spent the majority of the session in the pits but any potential problems were solved with the American taking sixth in the timesheet.
Honda Racing's Jason O'Halloran found a small return to form in seventh ahead of Christian Iddon and James Ellison while RAF Reserves BMW's Peter Hickman completed the top ten.
