Josh Brookes has continued his fine form around Thruxton by topping free practice two on the Milwaukee Yamaha, while John Hopkins made a late surge to grab second during the Friday afternoon session.
The double race winner at Brands Hatch last time out had been trading top spot with Shane Byrne before the pace increased in the final ten minutes of the session.
Despite personal best laps from Richard Cooper, James Westmoreland and Luke Mossey, Brookes retained his advantage out front by setting the fastest lap of the weekend so far.
12 months ago the Milwaukee Yamaha rider grabbed two race wins at the Hampshire circuit and looks in ominous form after pulling out a 0.2s cushion on his nearest challenger Hopkins.
Hopkins, acting as stand in for the second consecutive round for the injured Jakub Smrz at Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati, pinched P2 late on from Anvil Hire TAG Kawasaki's Cooper as the chequered flag fell, while Westmoreland and Mossey rounded out the top five.
Bennetts Suzuki's Christian Iddon made a surprising rise up the timesheet into sixth ahead of Smiths Racing BMW's Billy McConnell, RAF Reserves BMW's Peter Hickman and Be Wiser Kawasaki's Chris Walker.
Ian Hutchinson, acting as stand in for the injured Stuart Easton, rounded out the top ten but his PBM Kawasaki team-mate and championship leader Shane Byrne struggled for top end pace in FP2 and finished the session in 12th.
Adam Jenkinson, who has been called in as a late replacement for Broc Parkes after the former MotoGP rider pulled out of the race weekend with an arm pump injury, made a positive start by ending the session 15th despite very limited time on the bike.
