Josh Brookes has grabbed a phenomenal pole position at Thruxton after fending off the charging John Hopkins, while BSB championship leader Shane Byrne suffered a difficult qualifying and starts race one down in 17th.

The Milwaukee Yamaha rider set the time for Hopkins to beat in the opening stages of Q3 with a 1m 14.464s but the 2011 BSB runner-up suffered with a couple of errors on his Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati on his hot laps and could only manage second.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Luke Mossey converted his impressive free practice pace into a front row start at Thruxton while a host of high profile names missed out, including Byrne, both Tyco BMW riders Michael Laverty (20th) and Tommy Bridewell (11th) and Buildbase BMW's Ryuichi Kiyonari (22nd).

Byrne had been somewhat off the pace during the majority of practice but caused a shock after failing to improve his lap time in Q2 and was subsequently knocked out sitting in 17th place.

Q2 was briefly suspended when Jason O'Halloran suffered a heavy crash at Noble. While on a hot lap the Honda Racing rider clipped the rear wheel of Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Howie Mainwaring-Smart which sent the Australian careering off at high speeds.

O'Halloran underwent scans at the circuit which revealed a suspected broken right femur and has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

With a number of front runners missing out in Q3 qualifying there is a shake up across the front three rows, with Honda Racing's Dan Linfoot heading row two ahead of JG Speedfit Kawasaki's James Ellison and RAF Reserves BMW's Peter Hickman.

Bennetts Suzuki's Christian Iddon grabbed seventh on the grid in front of double rostrum winner from Brands Hatch Richard Cooper and Be Wiser Kawasaki's Danny Buchan.

Mainwaring-Smart, who sustained damage in the collision with O'Halloran in Q2, was unable to set a time in the shootout and will start race one from tenth.

In a highly eventful qualifying, Q1 was also prematurely halted after just three minutes when Billy McConnell's Smiths Racing BMW expired at Club corner. The bike appeared to throw down drips of water and oil on to the track, forcing the session to be briefly red flagged to enable race marshals to inspect the track and ensure it was safe.

Once the sessions restarted the biggest names to drop out in Q1 pointed towards a Suzuka 8 Hours hangover after rostrum finisher Ryuichi Kiyonari and Bennetts Suzuki's Josh Waters both missing out in 22nd and 21st respectively, despite only being half a second off P1.

Once Q2 resumed Hopkins demonstrated to the rest of the BSB paddock what the Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati is capable of with a 1m 14.588s, pulling out over a quarter of a second on the field.

Unfortunately, the American was unable to replicate or improve his Q2 lap time in Q3 which ultimately handicapped his fight with Brookes for pole position.
