Shane Byrne says he needs to 'sit down and regroup' after a difficult start to the Showdown as he leaks 26 championship points to Josh Brookes at Assen.

The defending MCE British Superbike champion endured a frustrating round in tricky conditions at the Dutch circuit and despite showing solid race pace the PBM Kawasaki rider was unable to replicate his form from Oulton Park - where he claimed two race wins - and could only manage underwhelming fourth and fifth place finishes.

To compound matters, Brookes notched up a double victory race weekend and stretches his lead over Byrne to 28 points heading into the second round of the Showdown at Silverstone in two weeks time.

The four-time BSB title winner admits he struggled this weekend with his race pace compromised by intermittent rain showers during race two.

"The weekend hasn't been a disaster but it is a long way from ideal," Byrne said. "The iffy conditions meant that a bunch of other riders came out, before that I had been more than comfortable behind Josh, but the guys with nothing to lose got involved. We need to have a sit down and regroup now so we are ready for Silverstone.

"We came to Assen in a good frame of mind because of the setting we found at Oulton Park and we tried to persevere with it but the changing conditions during the weekend made it difficult.

"I don't want to make excuses, but it isn't ideal and just highlights how difficult the Showdown can be."
