Brands Hatch Grand Prix: Emotions overwhelm BSB champion Brookes

"It is something I can't put into words but it is something that I feel and it is a great feeling," - new British Superbike champion Josh Brookes.
Josh Brookes says claiming a maiden MCE British Superbike championship is an achievement beyond words after a frantic battle with Shane Byrne to take the crowning glory at Brands Hatch.

The Milwaukee Yamaha rider was made to fight to seal his BSB title in race one of the season finale triple-header and secured it in fine style, overtaking Byrne with a bold move on the inside at Stirling Bends midway through the race and sprinting clear.

After the opening lap both Brookes and Byrne were scrapping for the win and the equation became a simple one for the Australian: beat Byrne to take the victory and the title.

The thrilled Brookes says he's delighted to win the BSB title, a feat he feels has been a long time coming.

“It is amazing. I am the kid who grew up in Bringelly, a country town West of Sydney, and rode a dirt bike around a field for fun,” Brookes said. “One day it was a race then it turned into another race and into a career. To be here next to Shane Byrne and John Hopkins and take the British championship is something people said I'd never do. I always believed and had a desire from a very young age to pursue motorbikes as a career. It is something I can't put into words but it is something that I feel, and it is a great feeling.

“It has been an amazing victory after an amazing series of years for me and all the people close to me. I've really tried hard for a number of years and there has been a lot of people that have seen it in me but we haven't been able to secure it on the day. I'm so pleased to do it for everyone.”

Reflecting on the race which clinched the championship, arguably Brookes' best race of the season in terms of outright pace and race craft, he felt if it did come down to him versus Byrne he had the tools for the job.

“I got a good start but I could hear a reeving engine behind me and I knew it was Shakey,” he said. “He came past and I felt quite comfortable to follow him and see what he could do. After a few laps I needed to get past and create a gap again as our bike gets stronger in the mid and end race section.

“It was such a slow end to the race, every lap felt like it was on slow motion but I knew need to keep it calm and bring it home. The gap was big but I could here every little rattle on the bike and thought something could go wrong and at every corner I felt like I was in too tight and every exit to wide. There were so many emotions.”

After a fully-deserved championship win, taking 12 victories in 2015 and only finishing off the rostrum on two occasions all season, Brookes says he'll savour the emotions before getting back to business for the final two races of the year.

“We can't rock up to the line with a hangover, but a glass or two of champagne will be had to celebrate tonight.”

yzrm10: I never hear a word Josh says on the startline interviews,i just stare, drooling, slackjawed at his outrageously hot girlfriend.
Agreed. Even worse when Josh and Shakey are lined up side by side and Petra is there!
