Jason O'Halloran says being denied a shot in last year's MCE British Superbike Showdown was 'devastating' but explains watching on from the side has given him renewed confidence for 2016.

The Australian rider's 2015 campaign was prematurely halted after suffering a crash in qualifying at Thruxton in which he sustained a broken leg and left hand. The Australian had been holding a top six Showdown spot and was in fine form having taken a maiden BSB rostrum a few weeks before his crash at Snetterton.

O'Halloran has recently completed his comeback from his six-month layoff on his old Honda superstock machine and will now return home to Australia for four weeks of intense fitness training ahead of Honda Racing's pre-season testing schedule which is set to begin in early March.

Speaking to Crash.Net, O'Halloran has opened up about his anguish when his 2015 campaign was ended at a time he had been gathering momentum for the season finale and admits it took a long time to move on from the disappointment.

“Being a couple of rounds outside of the Showdown and knowing I could have made the top six in my first full year in the class with Honda it was devastating,” O'Halloran said. “There was so much that went in to last year from the team coming back to BSB, for myself and for my preparation it was a fairly big blow and not easy to accept.”

During his recovery the 2014 National Superstock Championship runner-up naturally kept a close eye on BSB and his Honda Racing squad and was given a timely confidence boost by team-mate Dan Linfoot who took the Honda charge into the Showdown to finish fifth overall.

“To be fair the day I got injured the bike was good,” he explained. “I'm sure if we'd continued we could have got a few more podiums and maybe better so I'm confident in what we have got.

“It was good to see Dan in the Showdown and nice for the team after I got knocked out and couldn't be there. He had some podiums in the last part of the year at some circuits which we go back to at the start of this year, like Silverstone where he had a third, so we know we are capable of being at the front.”

With the majority of his rivals heading into 2016 with new machinery or changes to its set-up, Honda Racing is one of the few BSB squads not to make a significant switch over the winter. The continuity Honda holds is something O'Halloran believes the team can use to its advantage in the opening rounds.

“Yes, it is an older bike but I do belief it has enough to win some races and be a challenger,” he said. “If we do everything to our full potential then there is no reason why we can't be as competitive as everyone else out there.”
