Laverty finds solutions to Tyco BMW weaknesses

Michael Laverty says Tyco BMW has been able to make significant progress at Cartagena as he uncovers solutions to mid-corner grip weaknesses
Michael Laverty says he and Tyco BMW have been able to make significant progress at Cartagena with tweaks while he's been able to uncover solutions to weaknesses from last year.

The former MotoGP rider has investigated a range of set-up changes around the electronics, linkage and head angle to slash his average lap times in Spain as pre-season testing started in full flow ahead of the 2016 MCE British Superbike championship.

Laverty says Tyco BMW has also aimed to tackle the lack of grip in mid-corners it suffered with last year while adjusting with the BMW S1000RR and is confident he's solved the issue.

“We have steadily been putting different variables into the bike, we have started to change the chassis quite a lot and spent a bit of time with the electronics,” Laverty said on britishsuperbike.com. “I got a settled setting with that and then I tried a different linkage and a different head angle. We have found some things that were better and some things that were probably a step in the wrong direction but it's a learning process.

"I am really happy with the progress. One of the steps we have made with the linkage, straight away I consistently found half a second every lap and that is nice when you can put something in and get those sorts of results so I am really happy with my consistent pace.

"At the start of the test I couldn't spin it from the middle of the corner and drive out comfortably but now I can spin it and then steer to drive into the grip so that was what I wanted to achieve from this test.

“That was one of the weaknesses of last year, like at Brands Hatch when I was battling with James Ellison he had more grip than I had in that area and I knew it was a bit of a weakness we had so we identified the problem and found a solution so overall we have had positive test.”

Laverty and new team-mate Christian Iddon will now head to Almeria for a final Spanish test before returning to the UK to finalise its 2016 package.
