Leon Haslam has stolen the headlines at the first full complement test of the 2016 MCE British Superbike championship grid by topping the final two sessions at Silverstone for JG Speedfit Kawasaki.

The former World Superbike challenger has made his highly-anticipated return to the British series with the factory Kawasaki squad and has instantly demonstrated his pace after impressing with fast times during pre-season testing in Spain and has duly converted it at the Northamptonshire track.

With times tumbling throughout the day the JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider set the fastest lap overall with his last lap of the final session, a 2m 06.182s, pinching the top spot from Michael Laverty by just over one-tenth.

Despite the tricky conditions with a biting northern wind blowing down the circuit the temperature remained very low but it failed to stop the majority of the BSB field chipping away at lap times.

Timesheet topper from the midday session Haslam floated inside the top five for the majority of the final session before bolting to the front while a number of his BSB rivals all went for hot qualifying-style laps ahead of the new format to be introduced at the 2016 season opener at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Elsewhere, Quattro Plant Kawasaki recruit Filip Backlund almost stole the show completely by leaping up to third fastest with a 2m 06.405s, ahead of Laverty's new Tyco BMW team-mate Christian Iddon while Danny Buchan on the Ducati completed the top five.

Dan Linfoot produced the best showing for the Honda Racing squad with the sixth fastest time overall ahead of Be Wiser Ducati's Shane Byrne.

ePayMe Yamaha's John Hopkins had held on to top spot for the majority of the final session to demonstrate his potential pace but slipped back late on to take eighth on the timesheet, with Richard Cooper and Jason O'Halloran rounding out the top ten.

The BSB pack will now travel to Donington Park for a final day of pre-season testing ahead of the 2016 season opener at Silverstone on the 8-10 April.
