Kiyonari rejuvenated with fresh challenge

Ryuichi Kiyonari has admitted he was anxious joining Bennetts Suzuki but after hitting it off immediately with his new team he feels rejuvenated for a fresh challenge.

The three-time BSB champion has switched to Martin Halsall's Bennetts Suzuki squad for 2016 and is adapting to life with his new team and relatively unknown bike, the Suzuki GSX-R1000, albeit having raced it to a rostrum result at the Suzuka 8 Hours last year.

Kiyonari says he's beaming after instantly gelling with the new setup and is looking to extract the maximum from the Suzuki over the opening rounds.

“Before Cartagena I was worried because it was a new bike, new team, new team-mate and a new challenge but the team is very good and so is the bike,” Kiyonari said. “My team-mate [Tommy Bridewell] is very good and such a funny guy but professional at the same time.

“It is plus to that we are sharing data and information in the garage and we talking which corner and different setups which is very important to improve this bike. We have a good relationship.

“When I rode at Cartagena I produced a fast time with this bike and I felt very good and now I am riding more and more laps and feel very good. We tried a different setup and improved the machine with different parts. We have to put together the good points which is difficult.”

Kiyonari has also joked that the only negative point within his new surroundings is the rider himself and is looking to fight back after suffering a frustrating campaign last year. The Japanese rider finished a disappointing 20th in the BSB riders' standings last year and missed two of the three final rounds with Buildbase BMW.

“The bad point is the rider! The rider is too slow and I have to go faster and push hard. No, I hear many people say the bike is too old, not me, but the engine is very fast and the chassis is so good, I'm happy.”
