Michael Laverty has produced a small piece of revenge after being pipped for top spot in the final seconds at Silverstone by setting the fastest lap of the day at Donington Park with his final flyer to push Shane Byrne out.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider had held top spot for the majority of the afternoon session, having also taken the honour in the midday run, but in the final blitz of qualifying simulation laps Byrne lost out to Laverty as the chequered flag dropped.

Both riders ducked under the pole position time set by Ryuichi Kiyonari almost 12 months ago when Donington Park hosted the 2015 opener and despite Byrne setting fastest sector times of anyone on his final lap he failed to beat Laverty by five-hundredths of a second.

It will be made all the sweeter for Laverty having lost out on top spot to JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Leon Haslam at Silverstone in the closing seconds of Tuesday's test.

After claiming the fastest lap time at the Silverstone test on Tuesday the JG Speedfit Kawasaki crew opted to sit out the Donington Park test, as well as ePayMe Yamaha and Buildbase BMW, which meant a full representation of the BSB pecking order cannot be shown by the time screens.

The final session of pre-season testing provided those running to make any final tweaks ahead of the season opener at Silverstone next week, while the pace setters continued to chip away at the times.

Fastest riders from the opening sessions Laverty and Byrne traded the early quickest times with the Be Wiser Ducati settling on top with a 1m 26.548s, less than one-tenth off of Kiyonari's 2015 pole position time.

Perhaps significantly, Byrne also went under his own qualifying time set on his old Kawasaki last year which pointed towards the four-time BSB champion finding his top-end form with the Panigale R.

Elsewhere Jenny Tinmouth suffered a premature end to her last test session after crashing at the Esses with 25 minutes remaining. The session was red flagged with a quarter of an hour remaining after Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Filip Backlund fell heavily at Goddards and require medical attention. The Swedish rider required gas and tightly held his arm and is suspected to have suffered a broken collarbone.

After the brief stoppage the session resumed with enough time for qualifying-style runs and with a flurry of improvements Byrne duly went under the pole lap time from last year with a 1m 29.396s and pull two-tenths on Laverty.

In the final flyers both riders improved again but it was the Tyco BMW rider who storm to the top with a 1m 29.298s, with Byrne in second over half a second up on Christian Iddon in third.

Jason O'Halloran impressed on his comeback from injury for Honda Racing with fourth and an identical time to Luke Mossey, who was the meat in a Honda sandwich with Dan Linfoot in sixth.

Ryuichi Kiyonari claimed seventh on the timesheet for Bennetts Suzuki ahead of BSB rookie Glenn Irwin, Alastair Seeley and Danny Buchan who completed the top ten.
