James Ellison has claimed top spot honours in a wet final free practice at Silverstone as the MCE British Superbike championship builds towards the new qualifying format.

After heavy overnight rain completely soaked the Silverstone track the spring sunshine slowly dried out the surface which duly saw times, albeit way off the dry times, tumble throughout the session.

The fastest time of the session was duly set as the chequered flag fell on FP3 with Ellison going quickest for JG Speedfit Kawasaki with a 2m 19.572s. BSB rookie Sam Hornsey became the surprise package fighting for top spot and was narrowly edged out by Ellison take second for Team WD-40 Kawasaki.

Jakub Smrz, who topped FP1 in mixed conditions, had been on a hot lap to pinch the quickest time but feel at Farm which ended his charge in third ahead of ePayMe Yamaha's John Hopkins with Leon Haslam rounding out the top five.

With the majority of riders taking a tentative approach to FP3 ahead of qualifying, Danny Buchan became the unfortunate rider to suffer a fall at Club in the opening stages which effectively wrecked his session.

Friday's fastest rider Christian Iddon and Be Wiser Ducati's Shane Byrne became the pair trading top times for the middle chunk of the session before Ellison took to the front. Iddon's team-mate Michael Laverty claimed sixth with a late improvement ahead of wet-weather specialist Howie Mainwaring Smart and Honda's Jason O'Halloran. Iddon remained ahead of Byrne to complete the top ten.

cossiegaz: Off topic here but is anybody else getting a VC011 error on the BT sports app using iPad or iPhone? Any idea how to fix it before the race?
On PC I frequently get " An unexpected error has occurred, please try again in 5 minutes". But after 5 or 10 minutes, oe even a day, that thread is no longer usable. I'm beginning to think was named after their server performance.

I rate Jellison. He's an ex-world champion with mountains of experience. But in BSB he's viewed as a second-string rider, despite being a winner on second-string bikes. Watch him.
