Leon Haslam has pinched the honour of the fastest time from Christian Iddon with his final flyer at the MCE British Superbike in-season test at Oulton Park.
The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider, who claimed pole position at the 2016 season opener at Silverstone two weeks ago, once again jumped to the top of the timesheet late on with a 1m 35.025s to pull out a 0.150s advantage over Tyco BMW's Christian Iddon at the Cheshire track.
Honda Racing's Dan Linfoot was another rider to enjoy very late gains just before the chequered flag fell at the test to move up to third overall ahead of the morning's fastest rider Michael Laverty despite the Northern Irishman suffering a small fall at the end of the opening session.
Haslam's JG Speedfit Kawasaki team-mate James Ellison also crept up the timesheet working on refining the new ZX-10R into a competitive package as he ended the day fifth overall. Midday timesheet topper Luke Mossey completed a successful test sixth ahead of Honda's Jason O'Halloran and Buildbase BMW's Lee Jackson.
Race two winner at the season opener two weeks ago Peter Hickman faded late on to slip to ninth as Richard Cooper rounded out the top ten riders.
With track conditions improving throughout the day Tyco BMW duo Laverty and Iddon traded top times along with Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Mossey as lap times ticked towards last year's pole position time.
Last year's pole time when Oulton Park hosted round three of the 2015 champion last May was set by Josh Brookes, a 1m 34.946s, provided a fair comparison on single lap pace – albeit without the Ducati squads, including the likes of Shane Byrne, Glenn Irwin and Danny Buchan, who missed the test. Anvil Hire Yamaha were also absent from the test.
Despite finding small gains with the ePayMe Yamaha, John Hopkins suffered a fall with 20 minutes remaining in the final session and which ended his day prematurely even though walked away from the off at Shell bend okay.
