James Rispoli has confirmed he is ready to return to the MCE British Superbike championship for round two at Oulton Park after undergoing surgery on his injured finger.
The American rookie sustained a nasty wound when he crashed out of the 2016 curtain raiser at Silverstone three weeks ago, losing the tip of his little finger on his left hand, which has required surgery and rehabilitation.
The injury forced Risopli to miss race two at the opener plus the in-season test day at Oulton Park last week but the two-time AMA Supersport champion is confident he can regain his promising pace demonstrated in qualifying at Silverstone which saw him progress into the pole shootout.
“I'm really excited, my finger has been healing and everything is going to plan with it, and I want to carry on the momentum we had in qualifying and race one at Silverstone into Oulton Park,” Rispoli said. “We are going to be starting a little bit on the back foot because we missed the test day, which was really unfortunate.
“I've been doing a lot of physio and a lot of laser work on my finger, and as far as movement with it goes, it won't hinder me. However, with positioning of it on the handle bar I get stiffness from it, mainly from the sides where they folded the skin back up and there are a lot of nerves there, and that is where I could get some pain, and that could take some getting used to, but I'm confident it won't hinder me getting a result.”
Despite leaving Silverstone empty-handed, Rispoli has set himself the target of top Yamaha at Oulton Park – a track which holds fond memories for the 24-year-old after he grabbed a second place at the Cheshire track last year competing in the British Supersport championship.
“The goal again this weekend is to be amongst the factory bikes, and be the top Yamaha, that is my new goal,” he said. “It's going to be tough because Hopkins looked fast at the test and a few others did race runs.
“We need to really have as much time as we can and do as many laps as we can, so hopefully we have dry track time. I'm looking for two solid rides, and grabbing two bags full of points.”
