Leon Haslam sees Oulton Park as his first round of the season after the disappointment of Silverstone and has been given fresh optimism having topped the in-season test at the Cheshire track last week.
The JG Speedfit Kawasaki endured a difficult season opener at Silverstone despite claiming pole position as an technical fault forced him to retire from race one while he could only recover to fifth place in race two.
As a result, Haslam wants to forget the tricky opener with strong results at Oulton Park this bank holiday weekend – a circuit he returns to having last competed there eight years ago – and has been given fresh confidence from the recent test which he went quickest in on the new Kawasaki ZX-10R.
“Before the test here last week, I was a little nervous coming back to Oulton as it has been so long since I last rode it,” Haslam said. “It was a bit of a shock, but it didn't take too long to get back into the swing of things and it was actually a really positive test.
“We have to treat Oulton Park as the first round for me. It will be a bit more demanding and challenging to get into this track compared to Silverstone but we need to get the bike working at these circuits so that was why the test was so useful for me.
“As a team we made some really big steps and we learnt quite a lot, we have a few new components coming this weekend – they're already tried and tested, we just had to wait for them to be built, so that should help us even more.
“It's a very physical track and the bike wheelies a lot but it's a lot of fun to ride and the Kawasaki felt great. We've got a few more things to try during practice and a bit of a plan for the new parts, but I'm confident we can continue our pace and be pushing at the front.”
