Leon Haslam has timed his final flyer to perfection to grab pole position from JG Speedfit Kawasaki team-mate James Ellison at a slippery Oulton Park.

After grabbing pole at the season opener at Silverstone three weeks ago Haslam repeated the trick in the wet to take a second consecutive pole on his return to the MCE British Superbike championship, eventually grabbing P1 by nearly half a second.

With track conditions drying with every lap after rain drenched the Cheshire track, Haslam timed his last lap for the best conditions to take provisional pole from Ellison, but was made to sweat with Jason O'Halloran and Christian Iddon still on late flyers.

However, neither of them could improve late on to give Haslam pole, with Ellison keeping second ahead of O'Halloran on the front row. The Australian's Honda Racing team-mate Dan Linfoot grabbed fourth ahead of Tyco BMW duo Iddon and Michael Laverty who completed row two.

RAF Reserves BMW heads the third row in front of Team WD-40 Kawasaki's Jack Kennedy and Buildbase BMW's Lee Jackson.

Shane Byrne became a noticeable absentee from the pole position shootout after being caught out in the slippery conditions in Q2.

Q1 was halted before it had really begun after Glenn Irwin's Be Wiser Ducati Panigale R's clutch expired heading towards Island bend, forcing a red flag as oil had been dropped on the track.

After a 20-minute delay the session was declared green just as the rain eased off at the Cheshire track and with all bikes on track - with the expection of Irwin - times quickly tumbled thanks to a drying racing line.

Danny Buchan took a tumble at Knickerbrook which left Byrne as the sole Ducati still running in qualifying for the second session. Looking to push on the slippery surface the BSB championship leader saved a fall at Lodge corner but a lap later succumbed to a high side off at the exit of Hizzy's chicane which dumped him out in Q2.

Entering Q3 the provisional pole time traded hands multiple times as with each lap track conditions improved marginally, with Haslam getting his final flyer spot on for his second straight pole position in 2016.
