James Ellison has demonstrated how he claimed pole position and a dominant double victory at the Brands Hatch's Indy circuit last year by topping the opening practice session by almost two-tenths from Richard Cooper.

The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider, who hailed significant progress with his feeling on the new ZX-10R heading into round three, produced a late flyer to knock Cooper off top spot and into second.

The Buildbase BMW rider showed his maiden MCE British Superbike win last time out at Oulton Park was no flash in the pan moment by heading chasing pack in front of Luke Mossey and Leon Haslam.

Tommy Bridewell has enjoyed gains on the Bennetts Suzuki to rise to fifth ahead of BSB championship leader Christian Iddon on the Tyco BMW and Honda's Jason O'Halloran.

Fresh from supporting brother Eugene at Le Mans in MotoGP and brother-in-law Chaz Davies in World Superbikes at Sepang, Michael Laverty made a solid start to his race weekend in eight as Jakub Smrz and Ryuichi Kiyonari completed the top ten who were split by just over half a second.

Shane Byrne narrowly missed out on the top ten in 11th and fresh from his North West 200 triumph Alastair Seeley split the Be Wise Ducati's with Glenn Irwin in 13th.

Kiyonari made the opening headway on the timesheet before a times quickly rattled through the 46-second barrier as riders made the most of the drying running having had to battle slippery conditions at Oulton Park last time out.

The title contenders all made their mark at the top during the session including the likes of Byrne, Haslam and Laverty before a brief red flag stoppage caused by Howie Mainwaring Smart suffering a fall at Paddock Hill Bend on the Smiths Racing BMW.

After a five minute delay the session resumed with Buildbase BMW's Cooper being the first into the 45-second bracket. The race two winner at Oulton Park was denied top spot by Ellison late on with an impressive 45.698s to take almost two-tenths on the chasing pack.
