Brands Hatch Indy: Tyre wear work order of day for Byrne

Shane Byrne says he's satisfied with the progress his Be Wiser Ducati squad made with Pirelli tyre degradation and felt topping the Friday practice session came as an added bonus on fresh rubber.

The four-time MCE British Superbike champion topped the second free practice session thanks to a late flyer on new tyres with a 45.430s around Brands Hatch's Indy track configuration – just over two-tenths off of the lap record – leading ahead of Tyco BMW's Michael Laverty.

Byrne says despite the top spot prize he spent the majority of the day working on his race pace and tyre wear and feels confident heading into round three of the season.

“I think this track is easy to drive yourself mad about doing a lap time,” Byrne said. “It is tricky because the difference between doing a good lap and a bad one is so close. Some tracks you'll ride around and know full well when you are not on a good lap but around here you ride around and think you are not on it at all and only be one-tenth off.

“I think we've done lots of work with old tyres and improved on lap 28 of the set we used in the first session and then improved on lap 27 of the set we used in the afternoon session.

“We put a new tyre in at the end but everyone else does to push on a bit. With only two minutes to go at the end so it was a rush and scrappy lap but fast.

“It is important to be as fast because everyone is going to be at the same sort of pace. We always see here the top 20 are covered by next to nothing so trying to qualify well here is more important than at other tracks. We'll continue to chip away and have more steps we want to take, fingers crossed we'll get better and better.”
