Brands Hatch Indy: Mossey grabs maiden BSB pole

Luke Mossey has taken his maiden MCE British Superbike pole position after pinching the top spot from James Ellison as the chequered flag fell on a pulsating qualifying at Brands Hatch Indy.

Ellison, who stormed to pole and a double race win around the Indy configuration 12 months ago, had grabbed provisional pole with a 45.303s but with two minutes remaining it opened up the opportunity for Mossey.

The Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider topped both Q1 and Q2 heading into the pole shootout and duly delivered with a 45.275s – less than one-tenth off the lap record – but enough to given him his first pole position of his BSB career.

Ellison held on to second from Shane Byrne which saw Tyco BMW's Michael Laverty slip to the second row in fourth. Oulton Park race two winner Richard Cooper continued to impress on the Buildbase BMW with fifth on the grid ahead of Bennetts Suzuki's Tommy Bridewell.

Having taken pole position in the opening two rounds Leon Haslam struggled to keep pace with the front-runners and will start from seventh and is joined on row three by John Hopkins and Jason O'Halloran.

Q1 was suspended twice for two separate crashes, with Anvil Yamaha's James Rispoli falling heavily at Clearways before the second red flag stoppage when Team WD-40 Kawasaki's Jack Kennedy slipped off at the exit to Graham Hill bend – the same place which ended Ryuichi Kiyonari's race weekend when he suffered a broken left collarbone.

In Q2 Billy McConnell and Jason O'Halloran both fell victim to small crashes at Graham Hill bend but the Honda rider's previous best time was enough to progress into the pole shootout despite the Australia having a broken bike.

Silverstone race two winner Peter Hickman narrowly missed out and will start at the front of the fourth row with BSB championship leader Christian Iddon one place back in P11.

In the pole shootout Ellison repeated his feat from 12 months ago with a 45.3s to take provisional pole while Honda amazingly got O'Halloran's bike fixed to give him a chance to set a lap time.

With less than 60 minutes remaining for the chequered flag Mossey dialled in his Quattro Plant Kawasaki to take a maiden BSB pole.
