Brands Hatch Indy: Byrne hails ‘important win’ in Ducati foundation build

Shane Byrne says his first win of the year is a remarkable sign of the rate of development his team is producing on the Be Wiser Ducati.
Shane Byrne says as a four-time MCE British Superbike champion he's not given the 'period of grace' others enjoy to develop the new Ducati challenger and feels his first win of the season is an impressive job which reflects Paul Bird Motorsport's rate of improvement.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider grabbed a maiden win of the season to record the Italian manufacturer's first win in BSB since Michael Rutter's victory at Silverstone in 2010 – ending the longest win-less run of all the current manufacturers on the grid – after two impressive passes down the inside at Clearways on Leon Haslam and Richard Cooper in the final four laps.

Byrne says claiming a win so early in the development process of the Ducati Panigale is a credit to his Paul Bird Motorsport squad and Ducati and is relishing the prospect of a range of new upgrades after the mid-season break.

“It was a really, really important win because while it is early days in the project being Shane Byrne or being Paul Bird Motorsport there is expectations to win,” Byrne said. “Other teams got this period of grace and not expecting too much at the beginning but we rock up and not granted it.

“If it was that easy to win a BSB race there would be many more champions over the years. The team is doing an incredible job and working hard between us, Duacti UK and Ducati Italy to get the bike better.

“What we're doing now hopefully we'll never have to go back over. After this round we are due our first upgrades of the season so we've had to scratch our brains out to win a race here. It is a nice feeling here when never thousandth of a second counts we can come up and win.”

Despite a relatively positive start to his 2016 campaign with points finishes in every race and three rostrums including his victory in race two at Brands Hatch Indy, Byrne's unrelenting desire for wins means being second in the championship and just three points off of leader Haslam comes as little comfort.

“My problem is I'm only happy when I'm winning,” he said. “I only know that I had two seconds at Silverstone and won at Brands but the others I couldn't tell you. That is not me being a dick but I don't know or really care. We don't come here for anything else but race wins, myself and the team.”
