Brands Hatch Indy: Laverty upbeat despite 'frustrating' engine blow out

Michael Laverty has cast an optimistic figure despite the 'frustrating' engine blow out on his Tyco BMW in race two at Brands Hatch Indy.

After struggling to battle with the front pack despite being confident with his race pace, Laverty was forced to settle for sixth in the opener on the Indy configuration of the Brands Hatch track. Having made small adjustments he was feeling much stronger in race two until a dramatic engine failure on lap 10.

Blasting down Cooper straight Laverty's BMW S1000RR expired in clouds of smoke but the Nothern Irish rider had the presence of mind to move off the racing line and on to an escape road for fear of dropping oil on to the track.

“We think it is something internal, we are guessing probably valve train, because oil came out of the exhaust. Until the strip it they won't know the cause,” Laverty said. “It was a pity really. I struggled a bit in race one but had a better set-up in race two and I was only losing a bit of time off the last corner but could gain back a little bit and stay in contention.

“I knew from race one when everyone lost a bit of grip at the last corner I was quite constant so I was feeling quite good where I was so it was frustrating.

“Wasn't to be so we'll move on. Lost a few championship points but it's not been a disaster. The bike will be stronger at the next two rounds and we should be able to fight for some wins.”

After the perfect start to 2016 with victory in the season opener Laverty has been plagued by technical issues and tricky conditions which has seen the podium evade him since Silverstone.

Despite his first retirement of the year the Tyco BMW rider remains in the Showdown spots in fifth but is now 27 points behind new leader Leon Haslam.

“It has been frustrating because after winning the first race I was fast enough to win the second but for the water leak,” he said. “Then Oulton Park with the weather I was fast but cautious and came out with solid points.

“After practice I was doing consistent times but when we were in the mix we didn't have the drive coming out of the last corner to match the other guys. For race two we increased the power and it was better with the chassis changes.

“I felt faster but not sure I could have won. Mind, the pace was slower in race two so possibly. We're there or thereabouts just lacking a little bit this is the first one where both myself and Christian were lacking that last tenth.”
