Luke Mossey has hailed his Friday free practice at Knockhill as 'the best first day all year' after ending FP2 fourth overall and just a quarter of a second off leader Michael Laverty.
Having topped FP1 as the chequered flag fell on the morning session Mossey maintained his front-end charge by leading the second session for the middle chunk. As the pace ramped up with final flyers Mossey eventually slipped to fourth – with just 0.271s splitting the top four.
Mossey says after an opening session of reaffirming his rhythm on the Quattro Plant Kawasaki from the recent Snetterton test, the Cambridgeshire rider refined his ZX-10R with the goal of managing tyre wear which plagued his charge at Brands Hatch Indy last time out in May.
“The best first day we have had all year,” Mossey said. “Top in the first session after we left the bike alone from Snetterton and didn't really change anything just changed the gearing.
“The second one we only used one tyre and tried different settings just to see what would be more suitable for race conditions and I'm feeling comfortable on that.
“We were disappointed at Brands because we were wearing the rear tyre out too much. We tried a different shock at Snetterton test last week and I think we found something. Obviously only time will tell on Sunday but everything is looking good and we can get that first trophy of the year.”
Mossey, who claimed an impressive pole position last time out at Brands Hatch, is targeting a return to the rostrum for the first time since Assen last year which helped fuel his charge to the 2015 MCE British Superbike Riders' Cup.
