Snetterton 300: Byrne keen to convert Superpole success

Shane Byrne says he's 'chuffed' with making another slice of MCE British Superbike history by claiming pole position in the debut of the Superpole qualifying format as he aims to convert it into a sixth consecutive race win at Snetterton.

Over the past two years Byrne has enjoyed a flawless record at Snetterton having claimed five consecutive BSB wins at the Norfolk track, stretching back to race two in 2013, and the Be Wiser Ducati rider once again stamped his authority over the field by taking pole by over half a second.

The four-time BSB champion produced his 1m 47.795s pole time in the maiden running of the Superpole qualifying – where the top nine riders get one flying lap on their own in the pole shootout – to grab his second pole of 2016.

“I am really happy with that lap time,” Byrne said. “I was a little nervous before I went out for my lap as I had got to see Leon's [Haslam] time so I knew what I had to do to beat it.

“On the lap itself I knew I had a little bit in hand and I knew I was up on my best previous time. I kept nicking time here and there, but had a few little errors too but when I saw the final time I was pretty chuffed.”

With five consecutive wins at Snetterton, Byrne is solely focused on extending that run to pile up his podium credits ahead of the BSB Showdown.

Byrne currently trails Leon Haslam by three points in terms of podium credits and 13 points at the top of the regular championship standings.

“The team have done a great job and we are building to be as good as we can for the Showdown,” he said. “So far, so good and we need to keep it up now. I have had a lot of good races here so hopefully we can have more of the same tomorrow.”
