Thruxton: Hopkins forced to sit out Thruxton

John Hopkins has failed to recover from his injuries sustained at Knockhill and will sit out round six of the BSB championship at Thruxton.
John Hopkins has failed to recover from his injuries sustained at Knockhill and will sit out round six of the MCE British Superbike championship at Thruxton.

The ePayMe Yamaha rider had been targeting a speedy comeback at the Hampshire circuit less than a month on from a broken and dislocated right collarbone and broken ribs in a crash during the wet race two at Knockhill.

Having undergone surgery immediately after the Scottish round as well as treatment and physiotherapy the American rider has taken medical advice to miss Thruxton due to his injuries.

As a result, Tommy Hill's squad is reduced to just Stuart Easton with stand-in rider Broc Parkes returning to testing action ahead of the Suzuka 8 Hours.

Hopkins says the rate of recovery with his bones has been better than expected but with soft tissue damage he cannot risk further injury which could have a heavier impact and force him out for longer.

“I am extremely disappointed to miss this weekend,” Hopkins said. “It has been a positive recovery as when I visited my doctor he was very impressed with the rate of healing and the bone is moulding together but the problem is where the fracture is, is right in the joint and that had to be reconstructed.

“Unfortunately soft tissue takes time to heal and the smallest thing could knock it back out of place and put me out for longer.”

Despite his frustrations at missing a second consecutive round the American rider is solely focused on preparing himself for a return at Brands Hatch next month.

“As disappointing as it is to sit out this weekend we can come back to Brands Hatch and be fit,” he said. “It is such a shame as it is a track both myself and the Yamaha has proven to be strong at and it would have been nice to try and achieve one of our best results of the year.

“I now have all my focus on Brands Hatch and doing everything I can to be there and I have no doubt I will be ready to go.”
