Thruxton: Laverty: Just what we need for Showdown charge

Michael Laverty has hailed his victory and runner-up results from Thruxton as 'phenomenal' to kick-start his BSB title push.
Michael Laverty has hailed his victory and runner-up results from Thruxton as 'phenomenal' to kick-start his MCE British Superbike title push after shooting up to fourth in the riders' standings.

The Tyco BMW rider claimed his first win since the 2016 season opener at Silverstone to back-up his second place in race one at the Hampshire circuit to grab a healthy helping of championship points and podium credits.

After seeing Byrne pull away in the lead in race one, Laverty admits his task was made somewhat easier when the Be Wiser Ducati rider retired with a broken gear lever, but still needed to produce a flawless tyre management to build a gap and take victory ahead of Jason O'Halloran.

“We were lucky today in race two and Shakey's misfortune was our gain but I have had my fair share of that too this year so when Lady Luck shines on you, you have to take it,” Laverty said. "I still had to work really hard for that win and we had focused on the long game this weekend and it paid off as I saved the tyre and that was what we needed.

"To leave Thruxton with a first and second place finish was just what we needed for our Showdown campaign and it is a phenomenal result so I need to thank the Tyco BMW team. We can now look forward to Brands Hatch and carrying the momentum into the next round."

Laverty has moved to 11 points behind O'Halloran in third in the riders' championship, and more importantly has a useful gap to those chasing a top six Showdown spot, while the Northern Irish rider also has the third-most podium credits with 14, only behind Byrne and Leon Haslam (27 and 17 respectively).
